INSTALLING SIPS PANELS
SIPS panels seal the interior space, providing energy savings
and a very effective sound barrier.  SIPS reduce the use of
dimensional lumber.

It is easier to install SIPS with some advance preparation.
We offer you the following technical notes:

If you order SIPS panels pre-cut, which we recommend, you
cannot adjust them during construction as you can with
stick-built framing.  If you are using SIPS in an addition,
especially if this is to be built over an existing foundation, you
will need to start by creating a base for the SIPS which is
perfectly level, with squared corners and dimensions which
are exact or slightly larger than required.

We used panels with splines, i.e. 2x4's which fit into
pre-routed channels around the outer edges of each panel.
These are sealed with foam and nailed to the OSB outer
skins, forming part of the structural strength.  This step
needs to be done quickly, as the foam expands once it is
applied.

There are no other structural members needed.  A sill plate
is attached to the foundation, with a 2x4 fastened to it, on
which the panels are set one at a time.

Most SIPS manufacturers have BOCA reports specific to their
panels on their websites, which you can download and print
for inspectors.  If it is the first SIPS job in your jurisdiction,
contact the building inspectors before you start the project
and introduce them to the material.  This will eliminate delays
once you are under construction.
Electrical wiring is done usually through chases
pre-cut in the panels.  These may be channels in the
foam, or cardboard tubes pre-installed.  Each
manufacturer handles this a little differently, so check
with your manufacturer and your electrician first.
While the panels are being set, an easy way to
stabilize them is with 2x4 braces through the window
openings.  We think it is advisable to protect SIPS
from moisture during installation if possible.
